Unfortunately KHRO 1650 AM is doing some kind of partnership deal with the El Paso Times. That means my time on the radio is just about over. The first time I rip the paper for being lovers of drug smugglers and illegal aliens they'll demand I be "fired" (I don't get paid, so fired may be the wrong word).
Today just reinforced the notion that it's complete idiocy over there. Joe Muench writes very well, I just dislike his outlook sometimes and I think he needs to investigate some of the folks he champions. His missive this week has on a whole host of topics from County issues to City issues. You can catch his column here http://www.elpasotimes.com/opinion/ci_6719537.
He attacks City Council for not blocking developers from developing Wildwood canyon. He still thinks it's about "open spaces" and the smell of the desert or something like that. No, it's about property values. The save the arroyo folks are made up of 50% ankle biters who hate everything and 50% of people who want to sell their house in a few years and make major bucks. I happen to be related to someone whose house is backed up right on that arroyo. In fact they've been in that house some 40 years. They didn't like the arroyo going away, but they saw it differently than Muench.
They knew all along that that land was privately owned and could be built on. The time to act was years ago. They realized that it would be wrong to use the public will to strip the land from people who paid hard earned money for it. And after all, they are merely doing what the people who lived in their house did before them - buying land and putting houses on it. I guess they figure that we're all living on what was once an arroyo or desert habitat, why should I alone have the sole right to develop and not others?
The whole other point is "mob rule." ASARCO has been battling it as well and so have others. Zoning is a prickly issue, but there are rules. And just because you don't like it, doesn't make it against the law. These morons at the save the arroyo should have started years ago, instead they want to take personal property rights away from free Americans.
Oh yeah - I've grown up around that arroyo and the only persons I ever saw in it were people illegally dumping stuff and my cousin shooting birds with his BB gun. People really didn't care for it when they had it. The arroyo also attracted a bunch pet eating coyotes. I bet the people who had their little "fifi" eaten by a coyote were more than happy to develop the area.
Muench also brings up the latest "save the valley" issue where Council voted to let in a small commercial area in the Upper Valley. Typical racist Westsiders not wanting "dirty mexicans" living in their neighborhood is their issue. And god forbid blue collar folks live their either. It's disgusting. Save the valley is a group of racist people who don't want brown people in their little paradise - and that's it! You don't hear them fighting developments in the lower valley do you? Already full of brown folks, so they don't care. Go hang out with these people - they are white, rich and pissy. They are also worried that their property values will go down... recurring theme?
Once again Mr. Muench doesn't take into account that all of that is private property and if a farmer wants to sell it, he's got the right. You can't force him to farm forever. If the buyer wants to move people out there they should have that right as long as they follow the law. Having small commercial centers distributed in the area will only help reduce traffic headed toward one spot - Albertson's at Red Rd. and I-10. It would be a nightmare if people couldn't get basic goods on the corner - look at large parts of the west side and east side.
It just makes me mad that Muench can't see these people for who they are. He's smart guy, he just needs go to one of their klan meetings and realize that this ain't about the green that the ground provides us.
The EP Times (my future boss and editor from what I hear) also elected to run a guest editorial by Jim "I Hate Rich People" Revels - http://www.elpasotimes.com/opinion/ci_6719539. He wants to bring back the draft so that rich people will have to fight in the war in Iraq. He thinks it will be different than Vietnam where the draft sent only poor people to fight against their will. Such a moronic thought process deserves some kind of an award - I know, we'll make him an honorary democrat!
The draft would focus on young men 18-25 from what I've read. I wrote "focus" because they could consider, and have considered, older men. The best way out of the draft will to be to attend college. If you draft every 18 year old male every year for the next 5 years you'll bankrupt the collegiate system and we might as well just become Iraq, Iran or Syria where this has happened.
If you put the draft together like last time then college kids are immune. Guess who's most likely to attend college? Rich kids. They won't have to go because they are in school. Guess who is most likely not to attend college? Poor kids of ethnicities other than white! So a new draft will have just the opposite effect of what Mr. Revels wants.
Of course, he's not thinking things through, he's trying to scare Americans into thinking our military is falling apart. Untrue, as my cousin told me just a day ago, "I want to go to Iraq! For every 150,000 that have been there, there's 150,000 of who haven't gone and they won't send. I want to go so that some guy doesn't have to go a 3rd time and I'm not the only who feels that way." He says moral may be low because those not deployed feel like they aren't contributing enough. That's beautiful. That's an Army of volunteers. That's an Army and Armed Forces made up of people who want to do the job of defending this country. The last thing they need is a bunch of people who were forced into the military and not happy to be there to bring them down. Forced fighting is the #1 attribute of a force likely to lose in battle.
Besides, these democrats want to draft all these people into the military so they can say, "Hey, go fight in Iraq even though you don't want to and don't mind it when we play games with your funding and tell the American people that your success would be bad for our party, the party in control." So basically the democrats are going to sign up all these poor Americans and send the off to Iraq and then bash them as soon as they touch the sand! Maybe this is the democrats ultimate strategy to lose the war?!?!?
No matter what, it's important that guys like Mr. Revels come up with these racist and classist ideas so that people can figure who the democrats are. Poor minorities will be the ones sent off to wars they don't want to fight... off to be slaughtered so the democrats can play politics with Bush.
That's not leadership.
