(4.36 p.m.) UPDATED - Strelzin loses his entire audience by having Mayor John Cook's dad put them to sleep. God knows the Mayor's dad is a hero and a wonderful man, but he does not make great drive time radio. Bless his heart he's been through a lot, but Strelz made a huge mistake by leading in with him.
EP Media Group wins this round too.
Lesson to all of you aspiring radio talk show hosts - guests are best on the phone and for no more than eight minutes. Most of the time guests are not interesting because they are nervous and very guarded about what they say on the air.
--------------------------------------------------------
(4:21 p.m.) UPDATED - Lisa D scores major points by attracting new, first time callers that are loyal to KAMA's music. The callers are female. Huge demographic on FM radio! She's pulling them in on AM and that's amazing. I change my mind - EP Media Group wins.
---------------------------------------------------------
(4: 03 p.m.) UPDATED - Castro cancelled! KHRO wins because Strelz made it to air first.
----------------------------------------------------------
El Paso Media Group landed a whale of an interview for their first show today. They have none other than City Council person Melina Castro! The fun starts at 4 p.m. on 750 AM.
After that they will have Mayor John Cook at 5 p.m.
Paul Strelzin's first day at the afternoon drive time slot on KHRO will be actually contested by the EP Media Group's "Charlando Con La Gringa" hosted by Lisa Degliatoni (Lisa D). Who will win the battle?
I see this being a hard call for Strelzin's audience who fall all over each other to kiss the mayor's ass when they aren't kissing the Strelz's keester. Where will listeners go? Two asses to kiss and on different stations!
Here's the problem for both KHRO and KAMA (EP Media Group's station) - nobody is listening to either of those stations at 3:59 p.m. KHRO features Mario Solis Marich from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and nobody listens to him. KAMA has some kind of Mexican music that Mexicans don't even like - equate it to Christian rock. Fans of either Lisa D's or Strelzin's will have to make the choice and the move to one of the two stations from whatever they were listening to. That's a lot to ask if they are already invested in 600, 690 or 1380 because they've been "teasing" the subject matter or interviews that start at 4:00 pm.
I'm going to assume that both shows will start slow and either catch fire or burnout quickly. That's a crappy prediction, I know. If I knew what was going to happen I'd be paid a lot more money than I am now being paid.
KHRO's handling of the EP Media Group talent (Sito and Lisa D) may be the thing that bites them in the ass. I do know that EP Media Group is almost completely bought up when it comes to their advertising slots on KAMA. Word is they may make money starting today. That's big.
KHRO is still relying on Freyermuth to sell the ad time on that station. The bad thing for Greg is that he's selling himself as a conservative and then trying to sell the other hosts who are liberal. Much of the time the appeal to possible advertisers is the format. When you have a format consisting of one conservative and three liberals you have a hard sale. That means he has to go to business owners and say, "Give me some money, because I'm a guy who will support you and let's hope the liberals don't bash you too badly."
Newspaper Tree has an established book of advertisers who are comfortable with the personalities involved. It's an easier sell any way that you look at it.
Post a comment below as to which station you tuned into.
I was tuned to 690am to laugh at the crazy Mark Levin, but happened to flip to your blog and decided to tune in to hear what The Strelz had to say on his first day at 4pm. Missed the first 15 minutes

Thanks for checking in Tim. I've got both radio stations on right now.

I never got the strelz's show. Perhaps its a generational thing. I can read drudge on my own. It seems like his and a lot of the shows on khro were more like forums- the same callers call in all the time and the moderator makes a couple of comments. Not really a talk show IMHO. As far as Lisa D is concerned- its slightly better but its like the estrogen hour w/ Lisa D. I don't care about The View on the radio she should switch it over to politics- something she doesnt appear to know much about. I would prefer sito or davek. Perhaps ill go to crazy levin.

17 calls when john cook sr. was on for an hour

Listened to The Strelz for most of the show. Honestly, maybe it is the Historian in me, but I enjoyed the conversation with Mr. Cook, Sr.
Perhaps The Strelz should consider a regularly scheduled "interview" hour for the format and focus on oral history. Invite in people like Mr. Cook to talk about how things were, or even for example an immigrant from Mexico who came here 20+ years ago and was successful (and legal - don't want an on-air raid by INS). Maybe a break from politics.

Chorizo,
Thanks. I'm sure Sito appreciates it too.
Tim,
All politics all the time is the only way to go.

To be truthful, I never knew 750 existed until you put it on your blog.
So I have a choice in local talk between an angry, deranged senior citizen who believes he is the "Godfather of Radio" (set that bar a little high, didn't he?), OR I could listen to yapping women who go on as if we cared about their little brats and their "problems." Really, this lady whines like a hoe about kids talking back? What a really strong woman. Just pop the damn punk already.
We need some damn testosterone on the radio already. Strelz lost his when he began going through menopause in the 90s.
