Do not doubt for a second that Norma Chavez is an interesting story. You may not like her. She may not be next to Jesus on the list of "best human beings ever," but she's fascinating. Of all the people in El Paso who could have their own reality show or a sitcom written about them, Norma Chavez would be the person a Hollywood producer would pick.
Do any of you realize that I dazzle crowds of seasoned political operatives in their 50s who have seen everything that could be possibly seen on the campaign trail with stories about Norma? Little ol' me from El Paso has a Norma story to top any story they could even invent. That's how awesome of a life Norma Chavez is living and by God I'll never stop watching the train wreck and reporting on it so long as I have fingers that can type.
That's not true... I might get bored of all this and quit one day. Wouldn't you people be so lucky!
Norma isn't "powerful," she's incendiary. There's a big difference. She's the tornado, not FEMA. She tears things apart, not build them.
Norma doesn't have an army... she doesn't need one. When Norma says something, people listen. When Norma tells people an international bridge is going to be built over their house and the government is going to steal their land in order make that happen - people believe her. When Norma calls people corrupt - people, mind you, who are not in any way shape or form corrupt - people believe her.
Why would I not write about that? Why wouldn't I cover Norma? You people don't comprehend a single word I write about anything else, so why not give Norma my full attention?
In 2007 I told all of you about the corruption at EPISD and none of you gave a single shit about it. I told you about people buying future contracts with EPISD by giving to the PAC that supports the bond issue. I told you that the PAC was being illegally run out of EPISD headquarters. I told you that the PAC illegally used the EPISD logo to thank all the PAC supporters in the El Paso Times - the same supporters who all got work for giving money. That warning turned into several indictments and guilty pleas.
I told you numbskulls all about it. I even told reporter after reporter after reporter exactly what was going on and none of them did a damn thing about it. Why? Because the people I named were democrats and by God you don't attack democrats in El Paso because they are above reproach. I love these reporters on a personal level, but they refused to believe any of the names I gave them to be bad people. Good thing the FBI doesn't give a shit - people were indicted - people I told you from day one would be indicted. Does "Larry Medina" mean anything to you people? Maybe you saw his name on my blog a few times.
That's why I write about Norma! Every time I give you pertinent information about your future and how you're getting screwed, all of you go shopping for lunch in your nose with your thumb. If your own well being isn't interesting enough for you to act on, then it's not nearly interesting enough for me to write about - Norma is, however.
Do you know what's the worst part of the EPISD thing? Do you know? Senator Eliot Shapleigh told you what was happening! And you know what? I agreed with him!!!! And I pretty much dislike the guy more than anybody has ever disliked him. So, when I admit that Senator Shapleigh is right about something - he's sure as cheese in queso RIGHT about it!
Remember who turned on Shapleigh when he started this investigation. Remember those people who protected the corrupt EPISD officials instead of listening to exactly what Shapleigh was saying. I hope to God these people aren't still on your list of people how give you political information.
And for those of you on the fence of who to vote for in the congressional primary... it wasn't Congressman Reyes' faction who blew the whistle on EPISD. It wasn't Norma Chavez. It was the Shapleigh Campers - the very people who are now being called "corrupt" by the folks who supported all the players in the EPISD scandals. Think about that for a second. How many Shapleigh Campers have been indicted? ZERO. I'm not saying the Congressman has ever done anything wrong - because he hasn't. However, a lot of people who he has counted as supporters have gotten in trouble.
And how can I forget Dan Wever? He told all of you about the corruption so many times it was flat out annoying. None of you listened. His rock solid factual numbers on exactly what was happening and exactly when it was happening escaped all of you. He tried and tried to inform everyone and nobody (including me to some extent) would listen. He was right.
Here are some of my warnings to you people.
This one was especially good because I was totally right on what needed to be done and you ignored my advice - again.
Here's a letter written by Jim Tolbert who actually took my words to heart (and mind) and wrote a letter on EPISD problems. (none of this is aimed at you, Jim - you're a standup guy)
And in 2009 I tried to warn all of you again - and you didn't listen
And while I'm posting crap all of you ignored, why not read something I told you would happen with an issue you're about to vote on -
The reason investigative journalism won't work in El Paso is because all the bad people have everyone else convinced they are saints. They will be protected. It won't be until long after the FBI has marched them to jail in handcuffs that the local media gets the story.
Do you think any editor in El Paso would have run any of the stuff I've said on this blog about the people in this city? HELL NO! They're scared. Or they're so blinded by the bullshit they don't believe the facts given to them.
Case in point - Larry Medina. He was Jesus of El Paso winning more Conquistador awards than any other human on earth. He banned smoking in El Paso - he is God. The truth? Indicted. Nobody would listen to what I was telling them. I was told flat out by reporters that Larry is a good guy and would never ever do anything against the law. They refused to do the investigative journalism that was set upon their feet.
If nodoby would dare touch Scary Larry, what makes you think that any other politician would be the subject of true investigative journalism?
Has any journalist in town asked to see if the new city attorney had any correspondence with the CVNA? Nope. Not a single inquiry. And it's not like the journos don't read this blog - they all read it religiously. Maybe they're scared that any story that looks hostile to the mayor or his staff might make people think they're aligned with Pope Brown. I don't know, but there's no reason not to ask the question now that the city is being sued in federal court.
Bottom line - the only "investigating" any reporter in El Paso is going to do will be limited to paraphrasing the indictment a week after it comes out. Jaime Abeytia will post the whole thing so you can read it yourself rendering the investigative journalism effort completely useless.
I do want to give the El Paso Times a hand for pushing EPISD on the open records request. That's a start.
Thanks for stopping by - you'll forget all of this in a matter of minutes from now and sink back into your sheltered little world where guys like Larry Medina are Gods.
