I've been very busy blah blah blah. You know the excuses. I promise I'm going to post every day the rest of the week.
Today, let's cover a bunch of stuff.
Rumor has it that the lesbian bomb was dropped in public during a Norma/Naomi forum last week. Both of them have been rumored to be putting from the rough, but nothing has ever been said about it to the masses before. It doesn't really matter to me and I could care less if the rumors are true, false or somewhere in between. Who anyone is sleeping with besides me is none of my business. However, it does bring up some very interesting questions about democrats in El Paso.
Why would one of these women call the other a lesbian in public? Why would the democrats within earshot of that claim care? Aren't they the party of tolerance and fairness? (they're not, but that's a different post for a different time - the democratic party is run by rich white people who objectify minorities for their own gain)
The truth here is that local democrats in no way shape or form accept the agenda of the democrats on a national level. Their only buy in to the democratic party here in the Rio Grande Valley is a promise made to them by the democrats of the Johnson era (they were pretty much what you know as a republican today). Valley residents from Brownsville to El Paso were told to go vote democrat and they would get free stuff. Believe me, I know - there's a good chance that I'm related to the infamous Parrs of Duval County. Besides being an amateur historian on the Texas' Democratic Party hijinks, I've had many conversations with people were told that a democrat in office would mean free stuff for them. I have also been present at a gathering where this was said over and over again in spanish during the Margo vs. Shapleigh race four years ago. Democrats in this town are addicted to the promises made, not the party platform.
It should be noted that all of the promises made in the past (almost) two decades by Norma have landed them worse off than when she started. The lower valley has dropped in key statistics like employment and income while gaining in the categories of poverty, uninsured and teen pregnancies. That's a record I'd be very proud of... if I was Norma. She never lets the facts get in the way of the truth.
The fact that a crowd of likely democratic voters would hear about someone's sexuality from a candidate with everything to lose and fading away on the ropes shouldn't be shocking to anyone. It's a heavily Catholic district and you know how the church feels about homosexuality (insert joke about priests and boys here). Anyone surprised by this issue being aired out in a campaign is very naive and out of touch. Most of what democrats believe in is hard to swallow for your average Joe. Just look at their real intentions and the outcomes of their few legislative successes over the past half century - it reads like a manual on failure (don't bring up civil rights - democrats held it up and republicans got it passed).
Are these voters intolerant? You bet. This issue wouldn't have come up if it wasn't something the candidates knew would be an issue. It's right up there with declaring your opponent a Redskin's fan... okay, let's not get crazy here - being a Redskins is much worse than being a lesbian in El Paso (possibly anywhere). But it gets even worse than charges of lesbianism (not a word) - REPUBLICANISM (not a word either).
Norma is saying Naomi is a a republican and Naomi is returning the favor. Naomi is taking money from a group that used to give money to Norma. Norma finds this behavior reprehensible even though she used to take money from the same exact group. Of course, Naomi isn't without her own ammo. Norma has voted for the past two republican speakers and once kissed Governor Bush. Obviously, these indictments are serious business. Too bad nobody has figured out that they'd be a lot better off in that district if the were actually represented by a republican.
Mark my words - I hope this never ends. It's way too much fun for the rest of us.
Is it me or when the public calls for action on the drug violence by local, state, federal and heavenly authorities, they get pissed off when they do something. Governor Perry (I'm not a fan) decides to patrol the border with helicopters and dammit if that isn't good enough... or it's wrong... expensive... or God knows what. Make up your mind people. Your president's only solution has been to send more money for guns to the Mexican government (cartels). Perry decides to intimidate the cartels with what I call the "intro to M*A*S*H strategy" and you guys can't even give him a little credit? If you don't get that joke, you haven't either seen the intro to M*A*S*H or the helicopters patrolling the border. Whatever, this is probably lost on most of you because you have zero sense of humor.
I'm planning on doing a one part series (just a a regular post) on immigration reform and I'm doing it just for my buddy Jaime Abeytia. I think there's some things he hasn't thought of when it comes to immigration policy. I look forward to healthy one-sided debate. One-sided because I'm right about my analysis and nobody can prove me wrong. Look forward to that.
I know I'm missing something here, but it's late and the pregnant wife needs to get to bed and I need to be there with her. You know, before she was pregnant we didn't always spend that time before bed together. Now I feel I need to be there no matter what. I now know what keeps my friends with kids from staying out late - there's always something at home that beats everything else.
