That's a good question, I'm glad you asked.
But first...
How come I'm the only person talking about this? Where are the Greenies who are against literally everything? Where's my buddy Jaime and his suspicion of the El Paso business elite? Where's Senator Shapleigh and his hatred of the El Paso business elite? Where is everybody?
I gues they covered their bases with all of those people.
Back on topic...
How will you be made to pay for this? By choice or by force?
Something tells me that the powers that be want to try and put this up for a bond election. That might be why they are pushing the local media hard to print stories about downtown. It's a strategy to create the "need" in the minds of the masses even if there wasn't a discernible "need" previous to their efforts. It's called "priming" and people who can afford to control the media do it all the time when they needed the masses to go along with their sinister plan.
Then again, maybe the news stories are only cover for the politicians who are going to finagle a certificate of obligation-type solution to the funding. It's nice for a poiltico to have the cover of recent and frequent media reports showing a "need" for some kind of action. In this case the action is a $100,000,000 arena to be owned and operated by a group of private individuals.
There's evidence to support either theory of fleecing, but not enough to narrow it down to one. Expect the bond issue to be put on the ballot when they suspect we'll have ultra low turnout. I'm not sure when that might be, but it's how they sneak these things by voters. If they go the certificate of obligation route... well... you deserve it for not speaking up now. Since I'm the only one saying anything about it right now, I'm the only one who can say "told you so" when you get screwed.
Unless.... You want to loan some private group of citizens $100,000,000 to start a business that will probably fail and require you to pay all the debts off. If that's what you want, then go right ahead get yourself a big vacant building so you can say "we have a downtown night life!"
David K, thank you for putting this arena thing out so we would know what some are planning.
Wonder if any of us would even known about this arena if 1 commissioner hadn't asked about those HOT funds?
Do you think they would have tried to spring something on us? From you post, suspect the answer is yes.
So thanks! And a thank you to poster "Texaswoman" for trying to give us some dollar numbers.
