I had a brief conversation with a guy I can only describe as "federally employed in the security logistics field," and it yielded something very interesting.
I told him about my theory of how the occupiers, left long enough to commune in one spot, would start pumping each other's egos up enough to convince themselves they can take on the cops. He agreed with my theory and then went on to cite a multitude of cases where people in seclusion, whether it be actual seclusion by geography or physical barriers or psychological/sociological seclusion, had convinced themselves they could take on the authorities. He made me think that the authorities were absolutely expecting this to be the outcome of the protests in a few cities - most notably New York.
He also told me that there is a kind of "placeholder system" taking hold in New York and in DC. The original members of the "Occupy Wall Street" have things to do and are leaving the "occupied" parks for long periods of time. It turns out that many of them have real jobs or have found ways to cash in on the movement and need to leave the site in order to secure their business opportunities. In fact, he says lots of people are leaving and there was an original fear that it would make the movement start to look like it was losing momentum. Being pretty intelligent, if not whiny and spoiled, young people they figured out a way to keep the parks they have "occupied" full of "occupiers" long after they lose interest in camping out in the cold and the rain.
Who do you think covets prime camping spots in parks? The homeless. They're not usually allowed to spend the night and they sure as hell aren't allowed to pitch a tent. Special suspension of regular park rules for the protesters has allowed "occupiers" to turn the parks into something the homeless have always dreamed about - KOA campgrounds with all the amenities a homeless rambler could ever want. The "occupiers" are slowly replacing themselves in the parks with homeless people and plan on eventually turning each "occupied" park into a permanent shelter for homeless people.
Here's the genius in the plan - the authorities can't legally decipher the difference between someone political occupying the place and a person who is homeless and taking advantage of the situation. Even when the population becomes 99 percent non-political homeless people, the former "occupiers" will defend them in the legal system, which will allow them to stay indefinitely. Basically the "occupiers" will have a proxy protest force who are paid by handouts provided by sympathetic Americans who think they are giving rich people the bird. What they are really doing is creating multiple regional versions of Los Angeles' Skid Row.
Pretty sneaky!
I agree the police can't legally decipher the homeless vs protestor...reason being the 1st Amendment. The NYC Park is a private park and the El Paso Occupy is permitted unlike most across nation.
Normally the homeless can and will sleep in parks and streets etc and legal cases on this recently have shown when the homeless gave and showed a defense that the homeless shelters were full, then they were able to beat the $100 sleeping on park bench ticket or jailing with help of ACLU type .orgs

occupiers is the biggest bullshit protest their has ever been. i listend to dave ramsey yesterday and occupiers calling in dont even have a clue to what they are protesting and why wall street. the only legit complaints you can have about wall street is that people in the market only pay 15 percent in capital gains when they buy and sell stock and you can complain about the bailouts. however, the government both dems and republicans approved of the bailouts and the tax on capital gains and not wallstreet. now you can say wallstreet controls the politicians with donations to make those things happen, but you can say that about many other entities. i guess obama-ites need to complain about something. why not free trade ? oh, obama just signed free trade agreements with el salvador and a few other central american countries. free trade has killed this country along with ridiculous pay and benefits for all government employees. the banks, financial firms, and the car companies should have been made to file bankruptcy(7 or 11). the tax code should be simplified. if you want to complain or occupy then complain about those. oh, i forgot, many of those complaints are part of the "tea party".

sorry, "there" instead of "their".

My favorite OWS guy was the 18 yr old guy who complained that his $5000 Mac computer was stolen during his time there.
Repeat - 18 yr old complains that his $5K Mac was stolen.
Yep, that 1% of rich folks are GETTING OVER!

And yet you guys still close your eyes and defend Wall Street. The very people responsible for destroying individual wealth and pushing the country into the position it is today.
Sad thing is you guys will be joining them soon.

Im more worried about city council going along with this new Chief of the PDNG and wasting our tax money on an worthless Arena than i am about Wall Street. Taxes will go up because of it. Wall Street can Only make my Variable Roth IRA go down, that is it.

The government bailed out Goldman Sachs; the government bailed out the banks; the government bailed out the mortgage industry. Wall Street should have been allowed to fail. OWS should be protesting at the White House and Treasury Department and the Fed. That's who destroyed the economy.

The government bailed out Chrysler one time and bailed out G.M. and G.E. here recently too. The "Government" made those decisions. Both party's. The Government made the decision to lower capital gains tax years back to basically "bailout Wall street" back then. In a sense they were bailing out many pensions and retirement funds that were tied up in the market. Have you noticed the Fed keeps printing money and keeping the interest rate low. If interest rates went up Wall street would crash hard again. Our economy has gone bad since we signed the free trade agreement. The market soared when capital gains taxes were lowered. Clinton and the Dems lowered the restrictions on borrowing so Clinton's dream of everyone owning a home could be achieved. Sub-primes were sold bundled with these mortgages during the Bush Era and Clinton's dream didn't pan out. Some people are born to rent. Obama hasn't changed a damn thing since he went into office. Mexican truckers will now be on our roads(see el paso times). We need a new President and a new, simpler tax code. 9-9-9 is a start. It may not be the right plan, but at least its a start of some kind of different ideas. Our government is the problem, not Wall Street. Wall Street plays the hand they are dealt just like the rest of us.

I agree with Texasman!

Leave it to these bunch of dumbasses to make the homeless even more, uhm, homeless-er. And why am I the only one in the entire universe to ask why these mental retardates decided to protest something that occured THREE YEARS AGO! I mean even the Amish could have loaded up there horsey-wagons and staged protests through-out the nation faster than these jackballs.
Oh, I get it, they want jobs. First they bitch about how evil "The Man" is, and then they ask him for some cash and perhaps mix in a 401 K plan as well. And what better way to show future potential employers that you would be a valuable asset by showing the world that you're not bothered by wreaking of:
dirtweed, bottom-shelf rum, you and at least one other person's "love juices," and mace- courtesy of the NYPD. I wouldn't loan any of those nut jobs my belly button lint, let alone enough cash to by a house.
At least we don't have to worry about the chi-comms marching onto our soil and ruling over us. I mean, they teach their two year olds how to speak english, while our 22 year olds are texting momma and dadda that they need more scratch for Starbucks.
