I've let some things slip by hoping they'd become bigger stories. They haven't... so... I'll just talk about them now.
-----------------
Chente "Portly" Hente is thinking about taking his sopapilla agenda to the county level having not made much headway in Austin as piece of furniture for the last however many years. If I could sum up what Chente is thinking, it would be - "I'd like to sit around doing nothing closer to home."
I have no doubt that he's a serious contender in this race even though he should not be.
----------------
I'd be remiss if I didn't take a shot at the ever self-promoting-sweater vest wearing-ego maniac Hector H. Lopez for his rumored run for Portly Hente's house seat.
You may remember him as the guy on the radio... then again, you won't remember him on the radio because nobody listened to him. I did listen to him because I played a drinking game where you had to take shot every time he incorrectly pronounce "El Paso" as "OWL PAAUUUS-....SOOO." I was hammered by the third minute of the show. Other fun drinking games that could put you in a comma in four to five minutes were taking a shot every time he pleaded for a "conversation" on an issue and a shot for every time he mentioned himself and his middle initial. It wasn't bad radio, it was shitty radio. In fact, they play clips of his show at the Sam Donaldson School of Spanish Language Journalism just to show how things aren't supposed to be done.
I guess the best thing I learned about this fool was that he calls himself the "Vice President" of the "National Hispanic Institute." It's kind of easy to be "vice president" when there are only two people involved. Hell, when I was 10 my friend and I started our own club. I was vice president, treasurer, sergeant at arms, member benefits manager and the community outreach liaison.
Seriously, someone please tell me what the "National Hispanic Institute" does other than hold meetings to talk about meetings they might hold in the future about being "Hispanic." With brown folks seeing an increase in poverty among their ethnicity among many other disturbing trends, what exactly has Hector H. Lopez and his pretend group been doing?
Please elect this guy - he's a moron and the Republicans in Austin will sit him in a corner and put a dunce hat on him. He will make Texas Monthly's "Bum Steer Awards" each session, which means he'll be carrying on a tradition started by "Portly" Hente.
-----------------
El Paso democrats think it's okay to elect a leader who called their president the "N word." Nice.
To all of you black democrats in El Paso... I'm sure you can start your own party and get funding from the republicans at the state level seeing as how there is no republican party in El Paso at the moment. Nobody from the right is comfortable calling the president, or anyone else for that matter, the "N-word." You'd be welcomed, not called names.
Do you know why El Paso is so far behind? Just look at who is still calling the shots around there after all of these years.
--------------------
Willie Gandara doesn't show up to meetings... Who is surprised? Why would he have to do any of that crap? He represents the Valley and as long as he's not punching babies in the mouth, he'll be reelected until he dies or quits. What most of you don't understand is that the rich people like Gandara in the valley control everybody through that money. They get the votes, or people lose their incomes/homes/cars or whatever the rich people have them leveraged with. It is much more prevalent than you can imagine.
One especially mean former politico used to openly threaten valley families with the employment of their only wage earner if they put the wrong sign in their front yard. Most of these people in question worked at the county. Similar threats were made to city employees, but they were smart enough to know that they are protected by Civil Service rules and regs - which means you can't fire them for murdering people.
I like Vince Perez, but he's not a "shot caller" down there in the Valley. He's wasting his time. He should come back to Washington where he can get it in with a top notch PR firm and make some bucks. His kind of talent is rare even for Washington.

Thought I had more... but I don't.
Sorry for using this post to move to another subject and not commenting on your Monday writings, but what is the deal with Jerome Tighlman trying to run for Congress again. This time as a democrat. His ideology is a moving target! I understand there are addicts to drugs, liquor, sex, danger, plastic surgery; but I am starting to believe JT is has an adicton to being a perpetual candidate. I applaud the "if your don't succeed" mentality, but damn, enough is enough. Name me an election that JT was involved with that wasn't a loser and I will stand corrected.

Well GG don't see you throwing your name up for consideration. Do that and then you have some ground to stand on.

Last time I checked there was no requirement that one have run for office before expressing an opinion about someone how has done so.

Thinking back I have served over 10 years on various boards, commissions, committees at the city, county, and school districts. I opt to not run for anything for reasons of my own and will remain so. When one runs for something and one's philosophy, experience, etc is out for voters to approve of and they consistently offer rejection then it is time to stop proving Einstien's theory of insanity!

sorry gossip girl, but JT is a much better candidate than anybody running in the last city council election. i voted for Tim for congress, but i think running(and voting) as a write in was a waste of a vote. Much like my vote for Perot back when. As far as im concerned JT can run just as many times as he wants just as i can vote for losers as many times as i want. Not to get off subject, but has anybody been paying attention to the State of Alabama and their enforcing of immigration laws. Damn, now that is a state with some balls. Roll Tide !

Does any one of you really believe a black person ,no matter how good, can be elected in El Paso.Sure some will point out a few tokens but let's get real the chances are long not matter how you wish to slice it.Alright not need to point to Carl.As many times as Carl ran for office odds were, given time,he would get lucky maybe the same will happen with JT.Go JT!

I live in the third. Alot of people ar pissed at Little Willie.I beieve Vince may have a good shot.Any body but Little Willie I think will be the cry.Go get him Vince.

I think Willie has a lot to worry about and if you look at the recent meetings he looks...sad, mopey and depressed. Maybe he is beginning to realize that perhaps Socorro is ready for an Educated, well versed, English speaking representative that can further Socorro's needs by open, concise, clear and educated conversations, versus the back door dealings.
If you ever cruise the Courthouse and listen to Gandara in the Elevator you could swear that you are listening to a gang land, slang man fron El Pachuco...the man has absolutely no "class" so how in the world can he have any kind of "real" hard earned money that defines him as rich or well off?
I believe the citizens of Socorro are ready for an articulate speaker and they are proud that Mr. Perez can represent what they pray their children will aspire to be...an educated and charismatic speaker who wants to further Socorro and its citizenry and not hold them hostage to what the citizens have to make the Gandara's lives easier to dictate...I mean LIVE.

The third is more than Socorro it runs to the eastern part of the county up to Montanna Vista to the south- eastern city of El Paso. Those who live in these other area are tired of it always being about the needs of only Socorro. The citizens of the county, those who live outside of the small towns of this part of the county, get very little representation.Willie only has stepped up doing anything for these citizen in the last year and it has been very little. How about working for all in the third instead of the few.My community had been disenfranchise for so long that most do not care any more. After 30 years of being lift out one can understand the mind set.The sad part Little Willie did little to nothing to change this. Also the third is becoming more educated and the mind set of El Gran Hefe is no longer going to fly.I think Perez and Loya are breath of fresh air and are good standards for young people of the third in what one can become.

Tried listening to Hector H's radio show on KHRO radio. Was surprised how little he knew about El Paso. Went to music stations during that time period rather than listen to his self promotional nonsense.
Anyone with a little knowledge of El Paso should be able to run circles around this guy.
