A few of you have emailed me to see what I know about Congressman Beto O'Rourke's short time as your representative. Some of you want to know how badly he is doing (Reyes fans) and others are asking me if he'll be Minority Leader by the spring (Beto fans).
First and foremost - everybody is in love with his beautiful children and wife. Everybody has remarked on what a great looking family they are. Congress isn't a repository of good looks - as you know DC is Hollywood for ugly people. However, the O'Rourke's are a good looking clan and everyone has taken notice. Reporters were even tweeting about the subject.
As you would expect with a guy who knocked on the doors of thousands of strangers to get elected - he's had no problem asserting himself. I'm told he's confident and not intimidated by the all the hoopla. Some of you were hoping he'd be crushed like some hayseed in the big city. You forget O'Rourke's history if you think that would happen. O'Rourke is one of those true ambassadors of his hometown - able to rub shoulders with the elites, while championing his roots.
Insiders say his demeanor and approach to the job coupled with how safe his district is gives him a direct line to a leadership position. He's really a "bright star" they say. There will only be few "party line" votes he'll be held accountable for, so he can break with the Democrats if he needs to on some issues. However, I think Pelosi will shield her flock from controversial issues as a matter of strategy for the 2014 elections. He may not get a chance to rock the boat.
