Martin Paredes’ latest grand conspiracy is that the English speaking media in El Paso ignores the Spanish speaking media (that his cronies control). He points out that Karla from El Dario had the scoop before the English speaking media and therefore the English speaking media was doing its best to ignore the story. Martin forgets that television news doesn’t break into programming at 7:00 to report that the city manager is quitting her job in 320 days. He also forgets that they have set times to report news and that they don’t lead with a twitter post. They tend to focus on their set broadcast news hours to relate information.
Martin knows the score here. I know the score here. Karla Walton of the El Dario is the key.
If you ever get on Emma Acosta’s bad side, you’ll likely be getting a call from Karla Walton asking for a comment on some insane story Acosta cooked up to try and embarrass you. Allala, Norma and the rest of the anti-ballpark crowd use Karla for the same duty. Everybody at City Hall knows that when Karla comes calling, she’s armed with whatever Allala or Acosta has told her. This has utterly destroyed Karla’s credibility and most folks won’t even talk to her anymore. KVIA Channel 7 is learning a similar lesson. Oh, and I almost forgot – Karla hangs at Emma’s office, so it’s a no brainer what’s going on there.
Bottom line – Karla is the media tool of the anti-ballpark and anti-Joyce Wilson/progressives crowd. She blindly follows their lead and has more than once had her editor shut her down because her story was going to be defamatory because it was based on lies told to her by her “trusted sources.”
So, if Karla had it first you know that it was either Acosta or Allala. I have confirmed that city council members were told late Wednesday afternoon that a press conference would be held Thursday morning to announce the resignation. This was carried about by Mayor Leeser’s staff. So we know that Acosta knew Wednesday evening and her favorite reporter was the first to report it. Do you have to be a genius to figure this one out?
Now, did Acosta do anything wrong? NO. Mayor Leeser’s staff, and most of the top level staff at City Hall, are political novices. They don’t know how elected people act. Leeser and his staff assume that if they tell a city council member, “don’t say anything until tomorrow when we have the press conference,” that they will comply. After all, in Leeser’s world, whatever he says goes or the person is gone. In this case Leeser doesn’t have this power. Council’s care for Leeser’s direction can be summed up in the most appropriate El Paso-ism every uttered “you are not the boss of me.”
Acosta loves the cameras almost as much as she loves herself. Hell, watch a city council meeting and you’ll see her commenting on every single damn item like she’s cutting a campaign commercial. In fact, there was an item last Tuesday about the Lincoln center where every time someone tried to have the last word on the issue, Acosta would ring in again so she could have the last word (she was saying the same thing over and over again, or stealing what was said by Niland and retelling it because it was better than what she came up with). Finally Mayor Leeser had had enough of that crap and demanded comments come to a close. It’s Acosta’s MO – get in front of the cameras to try and build some kind of public persona that would allow her to run for higher office.
What happened on Wednesday is pretty much par for the course when it comes to Acosta letting the cat of the bag on sensitive issues. Apparently she’s the person you do not give information to if you want it to stay a secret. She will call Karla instantaneously and then work down her list of press contacts from there.
Do notice that Emma was the one quoted on the story – why not Ann Lilly? Because the rest of council knew there was going to be a press conference and that it would be a courtesy to wait. Acosta lacks the manners to do what’s right. She had to steal the spotlight for herself, which is a mean thing to do to one of her favorite dinner dates (in the emails I received from my open records request Wilson and Acosta make plans to have dinner frequently and like they are buddies).
None of this is really anything more than a little gamesmanship from a politico who doesn’t know her political career will end exactly where it started.
(Emma, you can keep telling everyone that if you had run you’d have kept Leeser out and beat Ortega, but that’s simply not true. You’re going to get recalled and beat by a guy who I think is mostly brain dead – you might even be a better pick in the end.)
However, it does show that Acosta has zero respect of Mayor Leeser. This is the third or fourth time she’s done this to him and a lot of people at City Hall are wondering when Leeser is going to grow a set of balls. Apparently the old administration knew about Acosta’s penchant for ruining the surprise and purposely kept her in the dark. Maybe Leeser needs to fortify his communications strategy in order to keep the overly political members of council from smacking his fingers with a hammer. This leak was nothing short of embarrassing and I don’t think Oscar Leeser likes to be embarrassed.
Sorry for the errors, this was written late at night while holding a teething baby. Needless to say, there’s as much slobber to clean up on the desk as there are grammar mistakes in this post.
