I've been hearing from a bunch of people about the District 2 race. As you all know, I like Rep. Jim Tolbert. He's a friend. He may have made a mistake, but it wasn't in some nefarious plot of enrich himself at the expense of voters. Oh and he called some guy a name that the guy deserved to be called. But what about the others?
This Burgess guy comes up a lot in emails to me. I have city staffers and sitting representatives claiming they a terrified he'll be elected. They don't know if he's crazy or stupid... or both. As one source put it "I'm afraid his anger will get physical if he's in office. There's a lot of compromising as a city rep and he has no interest in that. He will scream and yell and likely punch you if he can't get his way." Others have ventured a guess that he won't make it through the first ten minutes of any meeting. They say he'll have to be removed from every meeting because he is that absolutely unhinged. This would leave District 2 without representation.
What can I say? When people who hate me reach out to let me know they are scared of this guy, I have to say something. Also, looking at his platform is seems to be all about hating Jim Tolbert. He really has no goals. He just hates Jim Tolbert. I don't know about you, but hating Jim Tolbert isn't going to move the district forward.
And that brings me to the Shapleigh candidate. The lady in the race (I'll give her a break and not mention her name so she won't show up in google searches for her name. If she loses, I don't want this to affect her ability to get a job down the road)... Anywho, the lady in the race is Susie Byrd's candidate and by default a Shapleigh Camper. I'm sure she's nice and all, but her brain has been removed and a Shapleigh brain has been installed. You may love that or you may hate that - it's up to you.
I hear the grand Shapleigh plan is to slowly stock the city council with as many of their Manchurians as they can in order to have the city council vote it's powers and budget over to the county government. They would essentially turn the mayor's job into something like a Homecoming King position and the council in an advisory committee like student government.
Stay with me here.
You see, ever since the Beto, Steve and Susie dream team left council, they've lost all of their control at the city. They have since taken complete control of county government. The problem is that while the existence of the county government is the only protected and guaranteed government species as per the state constitution, it's not all that important in El Paso. Kind of like being a Four Star General in the Merchant Marines. But that could change if you had the votes to do it.
The fact is that the westside no longer votes for Shapleigh Campers. Reps. Niland and Svarzbein show that the rich part of town isn't playing Shapleigh politics anymore. And even when the Shapleigh Campers get someone in office at the city there are term limits and they have to go find another brain to steal in order to keep their power. With no term limits at the county and no westside representative to worry about (much less two of them), the county is perfect place for the Shapleigh Campers to hold all the power forever. If they could just get enough city council members to vote over all the money to them, their world would be perfect.
So, this lady in District 2 entire focus after being elected will be to transfer city power to the county. Again, you may love this and you may hate this. When I ran I called for a tremendous amount of consolidation between the two as a way to eliminate redundancy in services (for which you have a ton). However, I wasn't calling for the end of city council and the mayor.
Also, the problem with this lady is that she's going to take her commands from Byrd and friends. If you live in District 2 and have an issue, you'll have to go through Byrd to get to your rep. God forbid you're a political foe...
