It didn’t snow. It didn’t freeze. It rained and the lines at Blockbuster were ridiculous, but we didn't quite get the blizzard predicted locally. There’s a lot of blame to go around and I hope somebody gets a good spanking over this severe overreaction.
Calling off school the day before the storm makes sense if you are sure the storm in question is going to be bad. After all, busing the kids home early is a serious last minute logistics problem as well as dangerous in bad weather. But if the National Weather Service isn’t predicting a severe storm then the kids should attend school. The National Weather Service NEVER reported the kind carnage our local forecasters did.
Who’s to blame for the pumped up forecasts? Our media and us are to blame unfortunately. We let these guys scare the shit out of us every day and we buy every word they say. If they tell us it’s going to be a blizzard, we don’t question it. We shut down our schools and government entities as well as our offices because they told us all hell is going to break loose. We don’t think to check somewhere else besides our local news.
Our kids lost a day of learning that will be eventually be made up during Good Friday or during spring break. I know parents and teachers are both going to have change plans due to this wasted day. A little research and level headedness would have had El Paso running like business as usual.
As I watch the evening news now (abc 7) I see that they are desperately trying to save face. They traveled all the way to Hatch, New Mexico to show us how right they were. All of us who travel to the eastside via Hatch are thankful they called everything off today. It’s sick how they claim that "we're not out of the woods yet!"… Of course the weather they are predicting is going to happen after midnight tonight when all of you will be asleep because you had a house full of sugared-up kids all day.
An apology would have been nice. Trying to convince us that they were “technically” right is just a slap in the face. If you didn’t know for sure what was going to happen you (the media) should have said so. Instead you overshot predictions for ratings purposes.
Businesses and employees were left out in the cold, so to speak. Parents who work at jobs that pay them hourly had to stay home with young kids and lose a day’s pay. Businesses were forced to try and provide top quality service with a reduced staff. When you invented a winter storm you effectively punished the hard working parents of our community. Shame on you. I hope your story was worth it.
I’m so disgusted about this I can’t write about it anymore. Kudos to Joyce Wilson for keeping the city open. Rumor has it that Cobos told the schools to close. If true, screw him. If not true, screw him.
