All of you whiney El Pasoans who are pissed because Obama hasn't made an appearance here go blame your brown friends who answered polls saying they prefer Clinton. Yeah, that's right - Obama isn't here because he doesn't poll as well as Clinton with Hispanics.
Obama's camp looked at El Paso and took two factors and used them as the main reasons for not coming here.
1. El Paso has notoriously low voter turnout
2. El Paso is almost 80% Hispanic and Obama doesn't own that demographic
There's no reason for him to waste his time here given those two facts.
Now, before you open your mouth and close your ears realize that I know there are always exceptions to the rule. I know that the turnout has been tremendous this time around. I also know that there are plenty of Hispanics who support Obama. Too bad the decision not to come here was made way before we knew either of those caveats.
Obama's campaign is focusing on the places in Texas with large black, college, gen X and gen Y populations. Frankly El Paso lacks those demographics. Houston, Dallas and San Antonio are loaded with those types of voters.
Bill and Hillary's appearances here are desperate changes in strategy from a camp that is about to be eliminated from the competition. El Paso is a part of the "great brown hope" that may deliver Texas to the Clintons.
George Lopez's visit was more of a pep rally move than a voter outreach move. Sure he appeals to the Hispanics here, but he's not going to undo the reality that is the will of the Hispanic voting block.
I hate to burst your bubble folks, but El Paso is just a part of a desperate strategy and nothing more. Maybe a good turnout this time will change the way we are treated next time. We can only hope.
